The National Association of REALTORS® has proposed a $30 dues increase in 2019 to fund new initiatives and tackle the future needs and challenges of the industry. Of the increase, $17 is dedicated to REALTOR® Party programming, such as issues mobilization activities, state and local expenditures, and consumer advocacy outreach. The remaining $13 of the increase will fund operating programming, such as a forms/transaction-management platform and strategic business innovation. If the increase is approved, total NAR dues will be $150, plus the $35 special assessment for the ongoing consumer advertising campaign.
The proposal, which will be voted on by the NAR Board of Directors May 19, also includes a forward-looking annual 2.5% dues increase beginning in 2020 to continue to serve members at the highest level.
The new programming paid for in the 2019 budget is based on S.M.A.R.T initiatives, which stands for Strategic Measures Advancing REALTORS® to Tomorrow. The budget includes funding to:
- Define measurable increases in professionalism
- Increase influence in an uncertain legislative, regulatory, and political environment
- Take the management of real estate data to the next level
- Ensure the role of the REALTOR® is essential to the consumer.

The NAR wastes untold amounts of money on huge staff salaries, huge expense accounts, and unbelievable travel expenses for staff, Directors, and presidential liaisons. I used to be a presidential liaison and on several NAR committees, I saw first hand how much of the members’ money is totally wasted. REALTORS and BROKERS UNITE, tell NAR and your state and local associations to stop spending our members money, the money wasted is horrific. if NAR goes through with this dues increase, they will find themselves answering a lot of questions about how much money they are already wasting.
Agree! NAR is a large lobbying group in Washington and they are not heeding their member’s needs, but instead are growing in to a bloated & richer lobbying group at their member’s expense! NAR is Towing the political correctness agenda, ranging from anti-gun to open borders.

NAR must stop raising fees! But I called NAR-DC many times re. proposed tax changes & they tried hard to stop CUTS to home-mortgage deductions & others, dampening middle-class homeownership. It’s been going on too long.. fees across the board go up but members get little to no benefits! Realtors are inundated with costs since they are self employed, any increases in fees means less in the Realtors bank acct!

I totally agree and am willing to do whatever I need to do to help stop this insanity. NAR treats us just like the government in the way their budget it handled. Reading their comments about why and how the increase is to be spent is so ambiguous they must think we are stupid or just don’t care and will keep throwing money at them. It is time to put a stop to the needless increases. What do they really do to assist the Realtors?

If NAR really cared for its members & wanted them to flourish they would not be doing business w the trulia, zillow, realtor dot coms & those virtual – do-it-yourself open door type agencies. Taking money out of our pockets to pay large corporations to pay NAR is a circle of money – much like politicians & corporations profit from taking tax payer monies. For such a large increase in dues, the Association should ask the opinions of the members. It is coming out of our pocket, so we should have a say-so on how the money is going to be spent. I also am not in favor of other activities NAR is part of namely RPR as well as the favoritism of 3rd party providers over those of us who actually fund the association. I have never been asked to vote on NAR’s handling of my listing info (i.e. Zillow, Trulia, etc) nor various other changes that merely muddy the water. NAR is largely useless, duplicative and harmful to working Realtors. Useless because it believes its lobbying efforts in Washington help Realtors when in fact, in my experience, NAR is seen by consumers as simply another lobbyist trade group that is not interested in serving the public interest. Duplicative in that it repeats state Realtor work that is more responsive to Realtors on the ground. Harmful to the extent that it cooperates with non-real estate agent companies that work to eliminate personal and professional service to the home buying and selling public.

“Some of the increases in advocacy spending were driven by the 2016 election. The two groups that spent the most, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Realtors, included all political spending in their lobbying reports, which includes things like campaign advertising. NAR sold Realtors out on so many levels. They license out & get paid for “Realtor.com”, then collect fees for Zillow/Trulia to data mine our Realtor-paid-for and self-monitored MLS’s, of which we don’t get reimbursed. I live in a county which is one of the most devastated from Harvey. I have been a Realtor for 31 years. I have seen NOTHING that NAR has done to help. Our local board has been helpful but on a national level there has been nothing.

Jimmy, I’m in Houston, too, & I haven’t seen where HAR has given any money to flood victims. Has ANY ONE seen this? ~ WHERE would it be posted as verification, IF any Realtor money has been given to Harvey victims?, (of which I am one myself)~ Thank you very much for your Post!

I vote against any increase. As mentioned by another agent, the number of agents is increasing and therefore NAR’s revenues are increasing as well. Also, I see that voluntary contributions to TREPAC have been increasing every year. Part of that money goes to the national PAC as well. If $17 is dedicated to the Realtor Party activities and mobilization issues, with 1.5 million agents, this would yield to an additional $25,500,000/yr. to that lobbying budget! This is insane.

We have turned our business over to Zillow, Realtor. com, homes.com and other companies, we work hard to earn the consumers business, then download everything to these groups then they sell leads back to us. I say charge all the companies that receive our MLS info and pay back the Realtors that get the info. In total, I belong to five associations, institutions and societies currently and have been in real estate for 45 years and past President of what was our local board before a merger. “THE LIFE” blood of all associations, institutions and societies is dues and membership, make no mistake about it…and the national leadership is the worst at ignoring membership. Not knowing your political leanings I will only say that NAR is starting to act like the “swamp” in D.C., what is good for them also has to be good for us. BS! NAR listen!! NAR has become another bureaucracy ‘run wild’ ALWAYS WANTING MORE MONEY, while doing less for we licensees.
In a former life, I was a productivity consultant who facilitated organizational response and service expansion . . . without adding new employees. Bet I could fix NAR in about two weeks.
I also believe that any monies used to lobby at the national level IS WASTED DOLLARS. The best bang for the buck IS AT THE LOCAL & STATE LEVELS.

Let’s follow the examples set by the brave student’s from Parkland & the West Virginia school teachers & stand up to a group that has wasted enough of our hard earned money by excessive spending, selling our information for profit, enjoying pay increases & other benefits funded by each of us. Absolutely. Every Realtor has so many business expenses already. NRA needs to live within their current budget like we do. Stop wasting the millions you already receive! No dues hike!

$45 million dollar increase. What good is NAR anyway. I haven’t seen one more dollar profit.
This looks to me is $65.00 increase for the dues plus local dues. Like to know where this money will go? For every party Realtors been charged in here, where are these parties that is happening and I pay for it and I’m not invited? and now these web sides wants a piece of the pie (zillo, may lovely Realtors..ect).
First, I would relocate the association to an area that has a lower cost of doing business, just like many companies do. There should be a cost / benefit assessment to the current and previous programs, which is a pretty good indication of how successful new programs might be. No increase for you, but HAR did and took away some items, and then now charge more for those. “Platinum”! So now we will be well over the 500.00 mark.

Pam…you are correct!! With all the dues increases, it is getting really difficult to maintain. Additional dues….additional training classes (which I think is good) but increased costs…all this is really getting rediculous! No due increases and no increases in 2020!
I vote no in crease of dues. I see very little benefit but more restrictions to members. State provides more services to members than NAR.
I’ve just spent 6 months in an RV while rebuilding my home after Harvey . This was done out of pocket while my insurer tried to under pay my claim. Everyone has had their hand in my pocket so why should NAR be any different. We are coming back from one of the worse disaster years in US history and NAR wants more money. Doesn’t make sense.

We need a decrease NOT an increase. Like anything else the more you have ,the more you spend!
